Malou will always be the epitome of everything good in our organisation – passionate, hard-working and so ultimately dedicated to helping those affected by disaster.  I am so grateful for the many opportunities I had to spend time with Malou on trainings, and also during our visit to Cebu in November 2023. She really welcomed us so warmly and brought all the best snacks!  My favourite part of that trip was having Malou film a short video about SBOP for us to play during staff inductions. Ever the perfectionist, we had many takes and many laughs. I had the pleasure of recruiting Marilou to the SBOP role and we were so incredibly fortunate to have Marilou lead the country office and the team. Marilou was incredibly professional and generous with her time. She was wise and was always prepared to support me with navigating employment in the Philippines. It was a blessing to have Marilou as part of our team and she directed the team brilliantly and made SBOP what it is today and to achieve all the incredible work that they do.  I will miss Marilou greatly and will always think so fondly of her. A lot of people have already mentioned how kind, professional and hardworking Ms Malou was and the huge and lasting impact she had on ShelterBox. I also want to share a personal story about some conversations we had during the first Covid lockdown, when everyone was working from home. At the time, I was living with my extended family (my sister, brother-in-law, their 3 children and my own 2 children). In the UK this is quite unusual and most of my colleagues here were surprised to hear there were so many of us living in the same house. Malou simply replied “Oh, you’re doing it Philippines-style!” and was the only person who made me feel normal and like she understood my situation, as we shared family-stories and discussed work with nieces and nephews playing/completing schoolwork in the background of our video calls. She cared for her family so much and it was a privilege getting to know this side of her a bit better. Ms Malou, I know there are so many people in the Philippines and at ShelterBox, globally, who miss you. I miss you. Rest in peace x…

I first met Malou in Cornwall on a ShelterBox training course. We were both fairly new to the organisation and it was lovely to to get to know her, despite the freezing cold weather and snow! Marilou was the country manager on my first ShelterBox deployment, and I could not have asked for a better introduction to the world of humanitarian aid. Wherever we travelled, her calm manner, compassion and professionalism shone. She was impatient for change, and her deep commitment to providing aid as efficiently and effectively as possible to those who needed it most showed in everything she did, every single day. I met Marilou on a chilly training course in Jan 2020. Dressed in as many coats as she could find, she looked very unimpressed with the weather in Cornwall but her energy shone through. Not just then, but on so many encounters since. Undaunted by a challenge, always professional, and committed to her mission until the very end. I will miss her and remember her always. Marilou, I had recently started working at ShelterBox when you joined the SBOP team and I have fond memories of you and Rose visiting the UK for the first time. I can still remember how shocked you both were at experiencing winter in the UK, but as always you adapted and overcame! It was an absolute pleasure working with you, and I’ll always admire your persistence and energy in everything you did. Whether it was building the SBOP team, helping to set up the warehouse, or visiting many different offices to secure the tax exemption for Typhoon Odette.
