A Book of Remembrance

Joe Nunan

Starting his engineering career in Arup’s Nottingham office in 1990, Joe moved to London in 1996 and has been a hugely influential character in Arup’s London Civil Engineering team.  He spent over 35 years delivering outstanding results on complex infrastructure projects while guiding and developing the professional careers of inumerable junior engineers and technicians, especially in his role as an ICE SCE. He remained calm among the chaos of some of the most challenging projects, and quietly reassured and motivated those working with him.  His passion for sport, notably cycling and football, was never far from the surface with the annual Grand Tour season and Forest’s annual fight for survival getting him quite animated.  Joe has been a highly respected and well-liked team member and leader both in the civils team and more broadly within Arup and is deeply missed by his many friends.

Joe was a colleague I greatly respected and appreciated. When I moved to London, he played a big part in helping me settle in and made me feel comfortable in a new environment. He was always willing to offer support, share his knowledge, and provide thoughtful advice, and I greatly valued his opinion and friendship. His kindness, warmth, and positive presence made a lasting impact on those around him. It was a privilege to have known and worked with him, and he will be greatly missed….

I have only fond memories of Joe. I first met Joe on my first day at Arup in the BERTS project office in Putney, back in 1996. He taught me so much, whilst having lots of fun – especially the project Christmas parties, they were wild..   Joe and I worked together ever since as part of the Civil Engineering team at Arup in London. We’ve worked closely on many projects including Canary Wharf which Joe maintained an involvement in through his career. Joe was an excellent engineer, an impactful leader, a mentor to so many and a good friend to me. He held a deep domain knowledge and a strength in sharing his experience with others. He was generous with his time, open and honest and always great at solving technical challenges.   I treasure the time we spent working together and will never forget him. Miss you Joe….

Joe was my mentor during my formative years at Arup. He always had time for me and I am so sad that we have lost him. His expertise and pragmatism, coupled with his sense of humour and always kindness, stays with me. Thinking of the team and Joe’s family and friends at this difficult time….

It’s with great sadness I write this. It was pleasure to work alongside Joe – he made an effort to speak to me when I joined the London team and always took the time to answer my problems. His support and guidance with the ICE was invaluable. In recent years it was always lovely to see him at work drinks and I appreciated the time he took to catch up with everyone. Our team will miss him dearly. …

Joe was the kind of colleague everyone hopes to work with, he was skilled, thoughtful, had a lovely sense of humour and he was unfailingly kind. He always had time to listen, to explain, and to support those around him. His engineering legacy lives on in the people he helped, passed his knowlege on to and the projects he shaped. He will be greatly missed and it was a privalage to have known him and to have worked with him. …

Joe it was a privilege to work with you. You were more than a line manager—you were a guide, a mentor, and a constant source of support. Your guidance shaped not only the way I work, but also how I approach challenges and opportunities. I’m truly grateful for the time, patience, and encouragement you gave me. You’ll always be remembered for your leadership, kindness, and the positive impact you had on those around you. Rest In peace my dear friend!  …

Joe, you were my first ever “work dad” when I joined Arup as a young graduate, and I will always be grateful for the way you shaped the early years of my career. I had the privilege of working closely with you on projects, learning from your calm, pragmatic nature and the steady confidence you brought into every room.  You were so generous with your time and we could always count on you being one of the first in the office, having cycled across London, even when it was freezing cold and dark outside!  You encouraged me, pushed me, and believed in me, especially through my chartership process. Even while you were unwell, and even when I was on the other side of the world, you still made time to guide me and help me get it over the line. That generosity of spirit was simply who you were. A great person, a mentor in the truest sense, and you will be sorely missed….

I was saddened and shocked to hear the news of Joe’s death.  I have very fond memories of working with Joe it was always a pleasure.  The occasional chat about cycling was also fun.  My thoughts are with Joe’s family on this day and the coming months, which will be very difficult i know. Simon….

Joe was one of the most knowledgeable, professional, and dedicated civil engineers I have ever had the privilege to work with. More importantly, he was an exceptional mentor and person. I learned so much from him, not only about engineering but also about how to approach challenges with patience, professionalism, and kindness. I joined the company during the pandemic, having just moved to London to start a new life and career. Those early months were often overwhelming, but Joe always took the time to explain, answer questions, and offer support. He was incredibly patient and encouraging, and his guidance helped shape my journey. What I admired most about Joe was his calm and positive nature. No matter how difficult the situation, he seemed able to find a solution with a smile on his face. His reassuring presence made even the most challenging moments feel manageable. To leave you with a memory that will always stay with me, I’ll tell you about something that happened after an evening at the pub. As we were getting ready to leave, I realised I had forgotten my wallet at home and my phone battery was almost done. I still had more than an hour-long…

While I never worked with Joe directly, he was always available offer advice. I will fondly remember the late nights in the office where the shared comradery of the night shift team working on the widest range of projects shared advice and positive vibes to keep each other going. I will remember Joe as the quiet achiever leading by example. Thanks for everything….

It is with great sadness that I write in this book, but my life would not have been the same without Joe in it. His quiet confidence and thoughtful conversations helped me to think differently and better understand the challenges I faced. The lessons I learned from him are ones I will carry with me always. He was a great mentor, an excellent line manager, and someone I will remember….

Always someone I could turn to for an honest and effective review of a situation, be that work or personal, Joe helped and supported me constantly throughout our 25+ years working together. Joe’s clear expectations on standards and support for professional development has driven continual improvement in inumerable engineers and technicians in the civil team; he set the bar and delivered to the same high standards he expected of others and certainly inspired me as I’ve grown professionally over the years. I’ve particularly enjoyed our conversations about cycling – from the banalities of headwinds on our daily commutes (Joe always seemed to have a tailwind whichever way he was going) to the sneaked excitement of listening to and commenting on Tour de France livestreams in the office(!) keeping this going via Teams over the last couple of years – having a fellow obsessive to share the passion has been invaluable. While we are a poorer team without Joe, we are a stronger and more capable team for having had Joe with us as a positive team member and an effective leader. You will be missed, my friend….
