I was deeply saddened to hear of YuZhi’s passing. We were colleagues at the University of Plymouth where we attempted to bridge the Statistics/Civil Engineering discipline gap with several research projects. We were colleagues again at Swansea University after we had both, independently, decided to move there and then met each other at a research seminar to the surprise of us both. We continued to collaborate on several PhD and Postdoc projects. I have fond memories of her as a thoughtful and helpful colleague, with an ability to see past the strict limits of her chosen speciality.  …

Dear YuZhi I have had the pleasure of working with you for many years and was so saddened to hear of your passing.  You have been the most kind, caring and supportive colleague I know and will miss our little chats bumping into one another in the corridor.  I can still remember you joining our community in 2011 and meeting you in the Haldane building when you came for your interview and will never forget you.  Sincere condolences to your family at this difficult time.  Rest in peace YuZhi x Emma x…

I was deeply saddened to hear of YuZhi’s passing. I worked with YuZhi at the University of Plymouth and have fond memories of her as a caring and helpful colleague.   I also had the honour to work on research papers with YuZhi.  YuZhi was an excellent researcher and had many interesting and profound ideas.  Our last paper (reference below) is based on a lovely idea that YuZhi had, and I feel privileged to have worked with her to illustrate it. May YuZhi rest in peace.   Cai, Y. and Stander, J.(2019). The threshold GARCH model: Estimation and density forecasting for financial returns. Journal of Financial Econometrics, 18 (2), 395–424….

It’s still difficult for me to come to terms with the news of the passing away of Dr Yuzhi Cai, even a week after I first heard the heartbreaking news. Just before the start of the new year in 2024, she had messaged me, expressing that she was feeling better. She was a wonderful colleague during our time together at the University of Plymouth, some 20 years ago. After that, I relocated to London before she started her new job  in Swansea. Despite the physical distance, we remained connected by our shared research interests, and we kept in touch over the years. Whenever we communicated, she always extended warm wishes for good health to those around her.  In all, Yuzhi’s loving and caring nature touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She will be deeply missed.  …

Dear Yuzhi, I still can’t believe you are with us no more. All I can think and remember is your gentleness and caring nature. As a colleague, you are so solid in the excellent research you do and never seeks anything else but quality and scientific truth. Despite being an expert in your own area (quantile) and wide statistical field, you never boast. Instead, you are always humble to learn and supportive to others around you. I remember you responded to one particular review on your paper for the Hawkes process special issue: your wonderful sense of curiosity, joy and satisfaction with learning new things and improvements are so infectious and mark a true scholar. I have full respect for that. As a friend, you are not only gentle, caring, but always wise. You often pull us together for special occasions. I would never forget the time we celebrated the Chinese new year, the BBQ, the chive you grew and many more cherishable moments. I am still using the lovely Chinese jar you gifted me for my wedding every day and will miss you every day.  I hope you now rest in joy and peace with no pain or…

Yuzhi and I have been colleagues and friends for 10 years. We collaborated in a number of research projects and I learnt a lot from her master mind. My thought is with Yuzhi’s family. Yuzhi will be deeply missed. …

I had the great fortune to work with Yuzhi and with her mentor Professor Alan Hawkes at Swansea University. Yuzhi had a lovely personality and such a humble manner – but equally – a ‘world class’ talent and intellect. She had such a lovely nature and the ability to bring out the best in people she worked with. I was geniunely grateful for the times I got to work with her and amazed at her abilities as an academic. It was truly humbling to be in her company, her positivity was unmatched by anyone I have ever worked with and her smile could ‘light up’ a room. She was also an amazing mentor and someone who could nurture the talents of others around her and develop her students with an amazing level of skill. Requiescat en pace Yuzhi. You will be forever in our hearts.  …
