I did not know Dr Pickering, but I send my well wishes to his family. I hope that because of his legacy, you aren’t just left with feelings of sadness now….

22nd April 2021   Dear Nigel,  I am so saddened that you are gone. But I know you are up somewhere in the sky watching over us with a paint brush and your big grin.  You were a giant of a human being, a true gentleman who was kind, thoughtful and caring. Behind that distinguished grey hair and spectacles bellied a most wicked sense of humour that would light up any room.  Nigel, it was a true honour to have worked along side you for almost 20 years. You were an inspiration to all of us. Your knowledge and skills were astounding. You were respected and loved and colleagues and patients alike.  I was truly glad that I was able to see more of you and Janet during the latter stage of your illness. It was amazing to see you continuing to paint under the microscope when clearly your illness had progressed at such speed. I felt so privileged to be shown your favourite painting collection of the stupendous Patagonian succulents.  You were the most humble man I know.  I will always cherish our car journeys to your radiotherapy treatment. We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr Nigel Pickering.  He was a super doctor & a lovely man – always smiling & cheerful.My most abiding memory of him, is when he calmly & reassuringly sat opposite me in the ambulance, as I was rushed from Malmesbury Cottage Hospital in September 1990, to Swindon Hospital, for an emergency Caesarean Section.  Were it not for the quick diagnosis & prompt action from Dr Pickering & midwife Jane, the outcome of Ross’ birth may well have been so different.  Fortunately, all turned out well, & Ross – now a Captain for a Commercial Airline – looks forward to his 31st birthday later this year. Just stumbled across this news. Very sad to read this.  Have very fond memories of Dr Pickering during my time working for this surgery. Always very patient focused, always had a smile on his face when knocking on his door to ask something of him. Condolences to the family. He will be missed x …

What a nice and gentle man he was. He was always lovely to us….

Nigel was a wonderful GP – kind, thorough, personable and calm. When we moved to Sherston in 1994 we heard that he was a fantastic family doctor and this was always our experience. Over the years he provided us with excellent advice. In particular, after the birth of our second child, David explained we were thinking we might still have more children. We remember him talking with feeling about how great his experience was of having a larger family.We were fortunate to not need to visit the practice too often and so, when Caty saw Nigel next he said ‘I’m guessing you must be pregnant because that’s the only time I ever see you!’ .. and of course he was right. We went on to find out we were having twins and have certainly never regretted having a larger family.Nigel was clearly very proud of all his family. We met Nigel shortly after he joined the surgery and knew at once that we jellied and as such he was our chosen GP until his retirement. He was so easy to talk to, friendly, understanding, and knowledgeable that we considered him a friend and our GP. We were devastated when we heard he was to retire. R.I.P Dear Nigel.          …

Nigel was our GP for 27 years. He was a wonderful caring man and also a work colleague at Malmesbury Hospital. A true gentleman and a wonderful human being. We send our deepest condolences to his family at this time. Janet and Bob Bacon…

So sad to hear of Nigel’s death, but so nice to read from these many condolences that he was so clearly well regarded and that he made such a contribution to your community. I recognise many of the personal qualities and strengths described from the 3 years that I knew him as a fellow student at Oxford in the late 1970s, especially our third year when along with 7 or 8 others we shared student accommodation and thus many meals, discussions and even the odd beer!. He was friendly, thoughtful, kind, a good friend and keen artist but unfortunately we subsequently lost contact. My condolences and best wishes for his family….

I was deeeply said to hear that Nigel Pickering had passed away, far too soon.  Nigel was a caring man and an excellent GP.  He supported and guided me over twenty very difficult years.  Nigel always attended my care plan meetings at Rowden Hill House; the CMHT said it was unusual for a GP to do this which shows Nigel’s holistic approach to the care of his patients.  I have many special memories of my time as Nigel’s patient, too numerous to mention here. My condolences go to his wife and family….

How incredibly sad it was to learn of Dr Nigel’s passing. Not only was he an extremely caring and knowledgable doctor that we’ve all benefited from but an absolute gentleman out of hours also. We shared many moments watching our boys play cricket for Malmesbury and our sincere condolences go out to Tom and James (Jimmy!), as well as Janet and Sarah, who we were privileged and honoured to hold Sarah and Tom’s wedding here at the farm back in 2011. Our thoughts and love are with you all at this very sad time….

I remember the first time I met Nigel, I’d popped into see “mum” along St John Street. I was surprised to see a young couple sat in her lounge. “This is Nigel & Janet Pickering” she exclaimed they are moving in next door. From that day on Nigel became very much part of our family life. He was not only the family GP and our next door neighbour but a great friend especially to my mother “Marcia”. Nigel was a big part of the community, always a great listener and so patient.
