i was deeply saddened to hear the death of our beloved one(markku Laine)on 21March 2021 in Nairobi hospital, i was lucky enough to work with him and got the chance to see what agreat man he was. i will miss him dearly and wanted to extend my sympathies to you as family, know that we are thinking of him and remembering him. our thoughts and prayers as a family of Eucap are with him and the family as well.it was ajoy to work with him and i will never forget the warmth his smile brought to the office each and everyday.he will always be in our hearts and memories. I am so sorry for his loss!! the loss of him will be felt by the entire family of EUCAP.may the memories of their wonderful personality and many contributions be celebrated to all.he left a huge hole in all our lives the office wont ever be the same without him.we will all be thinking of him, he had atremendous impact who got to know him.we will miss him with all our hearts. kindly accept my condelences to the loss of him!!!  …

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Markku for his loss. My heart goes out to you at this time.  I had worked with Markku virtually as he was in a different field office, and I also met him in person once or twice when he in was Mogadishu, and each time I was struck by his humour, kindness and warmth. His loss was a great shock to us all and he will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace….

It is often only in hindsight we realise that our time could have been spent better, and this is very much the case when I think of Markku; where too many chances to grab a coffee or to catch up were missed during our time in the Mission, with no chances of rectifying this mistake. Markku was much more than a colleague, he was an institution in himself, and his trademark catchphrase “Garowe Out” is an endearing way of remembering him by. I know that his loss is bound to leave a vast empty space for those close to him, it will for us, his colleagues, but even more so for you, his family and for his friends across the world. Words cant fill the void, but I hope this book will help to express the admiration we shared for Markku, and the importance of the life he led. My deepest condolences for your loss….

Unfortunately I never met Markku personally , but saw and heard him during our morning meetings. You as a family have suffered a great loss, the greatest loss posible. Please accept my deepest and humble sympathy. I wish you all the best….

I rememeber we have shared the last meal in IC among colleagues, before your departure to Garowe. We had a wonderful evening, we played the Quiz and we laughed and had fun. I will always remember you Markku, your humor and your savvy and your charm. Rest in peace, dear friend!…

Having worked with Markku for the past year in Garowe, Puntland I was very sad to learn of his untimely death. He had a great sense of humour and fun. On Thursdays, evenings we spent many hours discussing all aspects of life. I will miss him and wish to extend my sympathies to his wife Lyudmila….

Its with a heavy heart and profound shock that I’ve learned about the death of a colleague and Head of Garowe Field Officer of EUCAP-Somalia Markku Laine.  The mission and Finland delegates in Somalia have lost a reliable leader and strong factor in the capacity building of the mission who until his death served us the Garowe field office.
