It is with the fondest memories that in March 2020 that I recall first seeing Markku speaking from his home in Finland with a family wall clock ticking away behind his head. Markku  quickly gained an early grip on what had to be achieved in the mission and his leadership and pragamatic stance on how to achieve and ongoing  success was clearly evident. In short time it was Markku character was quick to appear as alongside his clear professionalism a sense of asute timing and humour emerged. Many will recall his ‘signing off’ strap line of ‘Garowe Out!’ and the wearing of his EUCAP hat so clearly visible in our daily morning briefings. But it is in getting to know him personally through what became clear that we both enjoyed the game of golf and shared several golfing anologies to our daily tasks. Most recently Markku played myself and colleagues in a golfing competition on Mogadishu beach as part of the Mogadishu Golf Club. It was evident to all that he was an accomplished golfer and very readily embraced the golfing challenge in our regular closest to the pin competition and the inevitable sporting rivalry that saw Markku competitiveness…

I was deeply saddened to hear of Markku`s death these days. Time is moving faster and faster, as many people feel in the present. All the faster everything goes back to its course in the daily routine, as if death were not a reason to pause for a moment. I want to express my sincere sympathy. In the short time we got to know each other in the Mission EUCAP Somalia in Mogadishu, I admittedly did not have the same personal bond with Markku as you had with your family. However, I would like to let you know that I appreciated Markku very much. I will have fond memories of his kind, friendly and honest nature and his always good mood in any situation. And I remember well his joy at finally being able to become active in Garowe. Any work does not live on merit alone, but on the poeple who stand behind and stand up for that work. In this sense, part of Markku`s life`s work will always remain part of ours. In the book of history everyone has his place, Markku belongs to it, too! I wish the bereaved family strength, courage and perspective in the…
