Memories of

Clive Johnson

Our long-standing colleague Clive Johnson sadly passed away on the 23rd of September in hospital after a short illness.

Clive was well known to lots of staff having worked for the Royal Borough of Kingston for 23 years.

He was a highly respected and much-liked colleague involved in IT support over the years. He always went out of his way to be helpful and was tenacious in finding the best solutions to people’s problems. His dry humour always generated laughter.

He will be a massive loss to IT and the wider Council.

People can share their stories, thoughts and photos.  A book will then be created for his family to reflect on Clive’s working life at Kingston.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

My thoughts are with Clive’s family and friends at this sad time, for the loss of a great human being. I have known Clive since I started at RBK 12 years ago, Clive was always willing to drop everything and help others, going above and beyond with his huge heart and knowledge. Clive will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts….

Clive has been a very familiar face, I have seen him in and around number of times always ready to help colleagues including me as a new starter in 2018. I am truly sorry to hear of the loss. May his soul rest in peace….

Clive was my friend and a mentor, he had my back.  He was also a cantankerous old Git and a wind up merchant. I will miss him greatly. He had so much experience and he was not slow in putting his opionion across. I will miss our chats and his guidance.  Clive’s presence and loss will be felt for a long while to come. My best memory is when he told me that he stood up to one of the big bosses saying he was not going to do anything library related without my say so. It was nice to feel valued by him. So it is with a very sad heart I say goodbye and wish his family well, he did speak of you often…

We were all shocked by the sad news and even as I write this there is still an element of disbelief.  I’ve known Clive since he started at Kingston and he has always been a good friend and colleague. I’ll always fondly recall his words of wisdom, guaranteed to raise a laugh as he put the world to rights, a wry smile would indicate the imminent release of a quip to raise the spirits. Clive was highly respected by all who knew him and those he helped, highly skilled with the ability to adapt to new challenges quickly, He was tenacious in finding solutions to problems, going above and beyond what would be expected. Always offering help and advice to anyone who could benefit from his experience. He was the envy of many an IT director as he was the only person to have their own office. He would recount tales of working for the brewery, his time in Australia and the dismal state of English sport. He always emanated joy when talking of his children and grandchildren and the pride he had clearly reflected in each story. Whilst a man who wouldn’t express his personal feelings much they…

I am so sorry to hear about Clive’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with him at Kingston council during my time in the UK. I remember enjoying his sense of humour. He often made me smile and I appreciated how kind and incredibly helpful he was to all around him. I know he will be deeply missed….

Clive was a thoroughly helpful, honest, direct and decent man. My sincere condolences to his family, a true loss. The measure of a man is how quickly he can stand after a fall. When he fractured his shoulder a few years ago, within a week he turned up at the office to start a normal day’s work. All of us, especially Viv as his manager, had to sternly tell him to “go home”! He never made excuses; he always had time to help and would drop everything to assist. A true English gent with a dry sense of humour, a stiff upper lip and at the same time, someone passionate about many things. RIP dear sir….

Having known Clive for all 23 years both as a colleague and his line manager, so many memories …………   One day walking back from a work event on Ravens Ait, he tripped along the towpath and I saved him just in time, before he fell into the Thames.  On another occasion, he won 2nd place in our team wall standing squats competition! We were both quite feisty in our younger days and much more mellow in later years  but we never had cross words or had a falling out, despite him cheekily calling me ‘dragon lady’ and telling me to ‘chill babe’ always with one of his famous smiles. He definitely had a certain unique charm about him. As the years went on, he’d often tread on my toes, especially painful when wearing sandals and rarely held the door open for me but he was a true gent. Sometimes I’d be his secretary, offering to type up work things for him, especially when he was struggling with his hands and once calling the AA for him when his car wouldn’t start.  But he returned the favour by undertaking and achieving so many successful projects that I was hugely thankful…

On behalf of myself, Graham and our family we would like to thank you all for your condolances and lovely messages you have wrote for our father. Each and every story has been such a comfort to read and brought tears and laughter to our hearts and Im sure our father would have been touched at all these quirky little memories.  Reading stories of his love of IT has been no suprise and I’m so pleased to know that I wasn’t the only one who had no understanding of what he was talking about when he would chat for hours about his Job! But we loved his passion for IT and his work. He was dedicated and hardworking and we are incredibly proud of him and all he had achieved.  He was our greatest hero and biggest inspiration will forever be in our hearts xx…

I was shocked & saddened to hear that Clive had died. For somewhere around 20 years he has freely given his help & advice to me on all things IT. Much of the computer knowledge I now have was learnt from Clive – athough sometimes I only understood one word in every three! Always smiling & quick to make a joke or to chat about all manner of things he will be sorely missed by me & many others. My conolences to his family & friends….

My name is Niké and I was one of Clive’s closest friends for over 35 years. I’ve been so touched and moved by your comments. He loved working at Kingston Council, loved solving problems, and *loved* making people happy because he’d dealt with their IT issues. We are having a celebration of his life at 5pm, 26 October at the Roebuck pub on Richmond Hill. All are welcome….

So long Clive. The place really isn’t going to be the same again. Hope you have a glass of malbec wherever you are. I can hear the elephants breathe a sigh of relief now .. they can come safely back into the room! RIP…
