Stuart Pickering-Brown
I met Stuart in my very first week in Manchester in November 1993 and he became a very good friend and colleague over subsequent years. In the 1990s I remember many an enjoyable Thursday evening in Buxton with Stuart and other colleagues, sampling local beers and enjoying Stuart and Sharon’s kind hospitality. I was also fortunate to visit Stuart when he was based in Jacksonville – enjoying the scientific discussion at the Mayo and touring the various local highlights of beaches, bars and restaurants. This was also my first and only experience of a Halloween party in the US – which was quite something!
Although in different departments for most of our time this did not stop Stuart and I frequently discussing science, which was very easy to do – he was so passionate about his research on neurodegenerative disorders, especially dementia. Stuart was pivotal in encouraging me to expand my own research interests towards the dementia field – and we were fortunate enough to go on and secure joint funding together. We spent many an enjoyable time at conferences – experiencing the delights of places as far afield as Harrogate and Hawaii.
Stuart truly made groundbreaking discoveries in his research – which few scientists ever do. He was a fantastic advocate for dementia research both in Manchester and further afield, and will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. A life lost too early with so much still to give.
