I met Don around 1978 when I was due to play my first game for Unicorns. This was at the Cross Keys, Goodramgate. I asked the landlord if he knew Don and he pointed to him having a candle lit lunch with a girlfriend to celebrate his birthday! The games with Unicorns were always played in a great spirit, with the after-match camaraderie memorable. Whether it was being led around RAF Finningley, marching behind Ernie Cooper’s trombone, or having lock-ins at Hullensians, Don was always there at the heart of a wonderful group. Don created a lovely balance of rugby and fun with Unirorns for so many of us in those days. He enriched my rugby life and I shall never forget him.
