I has been my pleasure to have known Peter for more than 40 years – he was such a unique human and doubtless this is how he was able to create his bespoke role as clinical scientist in the hospital infection lab at PHLS in the 1980s and sustain that role over the many changes to the organisation in the subsequent 40 plus years! His clear thinking enabled him to both analyse problems and create practical solutions grounded in scientic evidence. His curiosity made him a willing partner for so many of us struggling with infection problems. I will always cherish the time we spent at the Sunlight laundry trying to understand what happened in a batch continuous washer and where the hell the Bacillus cereus was coming from! However, I will also miss Peter as a dear friend, someone to enjoy a craft beer and political discourse with, and who introduced me to many fine pubs. He will always be with me, sampling an ale at The Black Dog in Brentford. Rest in peace, Peter.
