Having sat near Michael’s desk for some 7 years, I can safely say that he made the fifth floor a better and more entertaining place, and that things are not the same without him.
Beyond his colourful character (and his inimitable dictations – “in the file of…” “comma” “full stop”), what has always struck me the most with Michael is how genuinely kind and humble he was, and how much he cared about people.
I will also miss his great sense of humour. I cannot count how many times he teased me about my French roots – but always meaning well and in a respectful manner.
He was great at making people feel comfortable.
I think there is a famous quote which says “do not mourn the one you lost; instead, rejoice in having known him”. I do not think the first part of that sentence is achievable, but I am certainly grateful and happy to have had the chance to know Michael.
Rest in peace Michael – thank you very much again for having been such a great human being. You are and will be really missed.
