Michael Fenn
I have been part of Michael’s team at Pinsent Masons for the last five or so years. Michael was truly one of the most remarkable people I have had the privilege of knowing. He was the defining figure in our team, a true leader, and rarely a day went by without Michael having at least a significant portion of the floor in fits of laughter through his razor-sharp wit and sense of fun.
Yet it was his other qualities of also being extremely humble, generous and thoughtful of others that made Michael so special. These were gifts that he bestowed on those around him without agenda and prejudice, and were a reflection of his fundamental morality and his enormous heart. It was these which inspired in me, as I’m sure in many others who got to know him, a profound loyalty, respect and, ultimately, love.
The picture above this dedication is taken after we won the City Giving Quiz 2023 together. Michael was the first to volunteer for the team, and in characteristic fashion, took it upon himself to walk the floor to rally the troops. He then captained our team to victory over more than fifty teams from other firms in the City. Along the way to ultimate glory, Michael made some great judgment calls, made everyone feel included, and we had a great laugh. In these ways that event captured in one evening what it was like to work with Michael on a day-to-day basis.
But Michael was much more than just a boss. I have countless fond memories of the conversations we had and the brilliant stories he shared, over a pint (or two). I loved being around Michael, even when he was relentlessly calling me a ‘great big Northern oaf’ and the ‘thickest person’ he’d ever met to go my university, or reminding me how I wasn’t remotely good enough for my partner (also in his team). I never had any doubt that these barbs were levelled with affection and in good humour. I will also never forget how he went out of his way to help and support me during some tougher periods, and there are few if any you’d rather have standing behind you at an hour of need.
I hope Michael’s family can take comfort and pride in the huge number of tributes shared since his Michael’s passing. It is clear from these that so many of us owe so much to Michael, and will always be thankful for the support he gave and the lessons he taught. He was truly a great man. I hope to always carry something of Michael with me, whether in the way I treat others, or in a determination to make the best of things and keep moving forward. If I exhibit these qualities even faintly compared with the way Michael did, I will be a much better person for it. My heartfelt condolences go out to Michael’s family and friends.
