I knew Simon for 27 of the 30 years he worked at the Agency and worked closely with him in the Borderline Section for nine years. Not only did he have an immense knowledge of the borderline area but he could always be relied upon for his common sense approach and his ability to provide a fresh, and often witty, perspective on complicated issues. Many have been the times that I have had to go to him with a seemingly insoluable problem and he would always have the answer – usually in minutes. Simon will be sorely missed both for his expertise and as a friend by the Borderline team and by many throughout the Agency.
