In Loving Memory of

Bryan Derek Castle

Beloved father, grandfather, companion, brother, father-in-law, uncle, neighbour, friend and former mayor of Marlborough. Lover of boats, travel, weather and all things colourful.

You will be sorely missed!

‘We give back to you, O God, those who you gave to us. You did not lose them when you gave them to us and we do not lose them by their return to you. Your dear Son has taught us that life is eternal and love cannot die. So death is only an horizon, and an horizon is only the limit of our sight. Open our eyes to see more clearly, and draw us closer to you that we may know that we are nearer to our loved ones, who are with you. You have told us that you are preparing a place for us: prepare us also for that happy place, that where you are we may also be always, O dear Lord of life and death.’ William Penn

I first met Bryan when I came to work for the Town Council.  A true champion of open spaces, nature, trees in particular and a deep thinker who always considered the ‘little people’.  He will be sorely missed at the Council table and by many in the town.  I took many photos of him through work but like this one in particular from Mayor Making – it is how I will choose to remember him, smiling and happy.  Cheers Bryan, and rest in peace…

Henry Oliver, on behalf of the North Wessex Downs AONB Partnership

I knew Bryan through his service as a member of the Council of Partners, the partnership that leads the conservation of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the nationally protected landscape in which Marlborough lies.  Bryan represented the communities and parishes of the area, and Marlborough Town Council in particular.  He was conscientious in his attendance at meetings and events and always had something worthwhile to say.  His affable charm was always apparent (something I as a staff member greatly appreciated) and it was a pleasure to have him among us.  One of the most committed and advernturous of our members, he was one of the very few to venture to the annual national conference of AONBs, helping to represent Marlborough and its lovely landscapes on the national stage.  I am very sorry to hear of his death and offer condolences to his family and friends on behalf of everyone involved in the AONB Partnership.  May he rest in peace and rise in glory.  …

Jay and Andrew

Dear Bryan, I have always been impressed by your cheerfulness and positive outlook towards life. It wasn’t long ago when I went to the Cathedral at Sheffield and sang carols together with You, Eve and John. Needless to say you said you enjoyed travelling and have been to many countries. Research says people who travel are not just knowledgeable, they are kind and empathetic. In fact, these do resonate with you. I’ve only shared a little time with you but these are my best memories of you that I will cherish forever. I really wanted to introduce Andrew to you when we meet the next time but time hasn’t given that opportunity to me. Nevertheless I have been talking about you to Andrew and we think you’re a hero and you will be remembered forever. We have been looking at Marlborough newspapers and the council website. We think you’ve been given the best honours that you truly deserve. We send our deepest condolences and love to John and Eve and Dan’s family. Eve and John have let us know that you passed away at peace when the church bells rang and that takes me on a memory ride of…

Dear Bryan we regret we did not have the opportunity to meet you, however we knew you through your son John whom you raised to be a kind and compassionate man, in his stories about you he always portrayed you as a charming man always brightening up wherever place you walked in. The kindness of your actions will make an echo through the years to come, for you leave this world a better place from the one you were born. Roberto Cahuantzi and  Veronica Biga  …

I was so sad to hear of Bryan’s passing, as he has been a dear friend all my adult life, although we have lived too many miles apart to meet as often as we would have wished. For several years, he came down to Weston – super – Mare to stay, so that he could join my bell ringing day tour around the S.W. I had the honour of being his first girl friend, when we met as bell ringers at Babbacombe in 1957. Later, he invited me to be his partner at the ceremony when he was made Mayor – with my husband’s permission! A lovely man that was devoted to his sons and will be sadly missed by all who knew him….

We were really sorry to hear about Bryan’s passing.  In what is surely a difficult time for his family, we hope comfort can be found in knowing that he is at peace and that he will be remembered by all those who’s lives he touched with love for tbe wonderful person he clearly was.  He is in our thoughts and prayers and we’ll be thinking of you all on the 28th. With love from Svetlana, Dave, Nikolas & Sebastian …
