Professor Patsy Healey OBE
The first time I was introduced to Patsy was as a final year undergraduate Planning student at Newcastle University. The professorial seminar was being hosted by visiting female Professor, Patsy Healey. This was the first time I had been taught by a female academic. Her passion for planning theory and it’s relevance for us as young aspiring planning professionals left a lasting impression on me. Many years later as a member of Newcastle Planning teaching staff myself, I was fortunate to be invited to work with Patsy on an engagement project with the young people of Wooler as part of the consultation process for the town’s Neighbourhood Plan. Patsy nurtured a very clear vision for how the voice and interests of Wooler’s young people should be integral to the plan making process. It was not only an honour to work alongside Patsy on that project, and to learn from her, but also to feel supported by her throughout that process. Patsy continued to provide that guidance even after the plan making was complete, offering her invaluable advice and reflections on the book that she was so keen to see me complete. Patsy has been supportive as a fellow planner, teaching colleague and friend and she will be dearly missed.
