Anthony was a sensitive and cultured man of impeccable taste and effortless elegance. He also had a wonderful sense of humour. Admired, respected and loved by all who knew him.
We first worked together at the Sheffield Playhouse in 1962. We shared digs and so began a lovely friendship. We had been cast in Arnold Wesker’s CHIPS WITH EVERYTHING as raw National Service recruits. A fearsome Sgt. Major had been hired to turn us young actors into fighting soldiers.
A challenge he embraced enthusiastically. Much marching, drilling, learning to handle weapons. He would roar such encouragements as “That’s a bayonet
you’re carrying, not a bleedin’ handbag”. Which, of course, convulsed us all. We did several other jobs together but that was the most fun.
Dear Anthony – May God Keep you in the hollow of his hand.
