Gareth Young

Dear Laura and Family,  I shall always have very fond memories of working with Gareth.  As a Past President, we travelled together, laughed together and sat for endless hours in meetings together, but always with one thing in mind. What could be done for others. That is always what was behind his advice and decisions. His in depth knowledge and his willingness to guide me as I went on my National Officer journey, were totally invaluable and, I believe, helped so very much.  Yes, we had fun.. eating the Latvian Taster Menu in Riga, each course being a complete surprise as neither of us could speak Latvian, or , with Sonja Hall, eating ice cream at midnight on the Pont d’Angelo in Rome, something which he said he would love for you to experience and I know you did. I shall always remember the look on his face when I asked if he could give me a couple of minutes to help me understand the vaguaries of polls!  More like hours but his patience making sure I understood how they all worked was outstanding and proof of his fine ability as a teacher.  I was so pleased when he bcame DGS and knew the union would be in good hands.  Like everyone, I was shocked, but nothing I can say can replace him but he truly leaves a fine legacy.
