M.J.B. (Henry) Riches
One of the best memories I cherish of Horris Hill was the annual bingo event, hosted by Mr Riches, where all the students would be cramped into a small classroom, five to a chair, and would all be talking amongst themselves with nervous excitement. Then, Mr Riches would enter the classroom, and to our delight, would be holding a huge bowl of sweets: Mars bars, Twix, mentos, and everything you could imagine. The room grew quiet and the game began. The ominous sound of the bingo balls rolling in their cage would fill the room. There was nothing but silence. Then a singular ball would drop, rolling slowly, deciding the fate of the trophy of sweets. Then Mr Riches would grab the ball, look at it, and chuckle. ‘Two pretty swans! The number is 22!’. We would all check our cards before a singular voice would roar out ‘BINGO’. We would all stare at him with jealous eyes as he would walk up and grab the trophy. This is just one of the many things that Mr Riches enjoyed doing for the students at Horris Hill. I doubt the school will be the same without him and I am sure he will be dearly missed. My condolences to his family, and may he rest in peace.
