Mary Ireland

This happened much too soon. I was sorry when Mary retired, but happy to think that she had a long time ahead of her. How wrong I was. Mary deserved a longer retirement in which to pursue her interests.

A no nonsense lady, I remember her words when addressed as Mrs. Ireland by OBs – “That’s my mother-in-law, I’m Mary.” What an impression she made in only eight short years at Bancroft’s.

As Chairman of the Scout Group at Bancroft’s I, and other members of the Group, frequently met Mary when she was living at the School. Returning from camps and visits she would come out to the front drive where equipment was being unloaded and speak to the Scouts, asking what they had been doing. Also, I must not forget the help she gave when, due to a family of Leaders relocation to Scotland, the Group was in danger of closing.

Mary Ireland will be much missed by not only the Bancroft’s community, but by many more whom her life touched.
