When I joined DERS in 2010, Makato was one of the first colleagues with whom I interacted regularly. He was extremely welcoming and kind, which made my transition to life in York so much easier. Through many lunches I was privileged to see both the academic and person behind the gentle presence in the staff room. I very much enjoyed our regular chance meetings on the daily commute or school run and will miss them a lot. Makoto, you will be sorely missed, but always remembered. May you rest in peace.
