IN MEMORY OF RUPERT BATES (Rupert the Bard)
Sobriety Date 14th February 1998
Radiant Rupert,
A man of delight & renown,
A wonderful gentleman
Whom I never saw with a frown;
I met him in the AA Fellowship,
Where we both found spiritual light,
A wonderful person,
Who always made others feel happy, joyous & bright.
I first met him,
Nearly twenty-three years ago,
In a Sheen meeting,
Where one Saturday night I did go;
There he received ‘spiritual tools’
That to us had previously been shown,
The seeds of recovery,
Were from that night sown.
He started to do spiritual things,
That brought joy to his heart,
From that moment,
Him & AA were never apart;
Not only did he remain sober,
Change came to his wife, life & family,
He had found a solution,
That brought peace, joy & serenity.
His lovely wife Carole,
Daughters Angharad & Morgan,
Were delighted to see their Dad,
Was virtually a new man;
His whole life changed,
As had mine,
He brought to his new surroundings,
Peace, joy & sunshine.
He was a superb actor,
He took on many a role,
As with the help of God & AA,
He did now through life stroll;
For life is said to be a play,
As actors we pass through,
In Rupert’s company,
You were always happy never blue.
He came from a theatrical family,
Acting ran through his veins,
This wonderful gentleman,
Who helped cure many peoples’ pains;
Born to Michael & Margaret,
He was the eldest of three,
With siblings Camilla & Jolyon,
He always sought to bring glee.
Life is certainly a journey,
In AA we learn to travel it with a smile,
Knowing our Higher Power is always with us,
As we travel every mile;
He learnt to help others,
Constantly giving away his free gift,
Helping others along the road,
Helping other people’s spirits lift.
He has now left us,
But his memory will live on,
This is a little poem,
Perhaps it should be a song;
Now with the Divine,
Radiating peace & sunshine,
With lovely God,
Making our life journies, easier & fine.
God bless Rupert, his family and friends, and all who knew him, always in my prayers.
Dennis Ealing 19/1/21.
