I won’t forget Rod’s strength, and his belief in me, as I played my 1st match for Uppingham’s 1st XV. That lad had springs for arms and legs, fearless in the tackle, pushed like a rhino in the scrums and made my job as the prop a hell of a lot easier. He read the game superbly and had extraordinary fitness. Hell of a player.
And then, after the game, a quiet, thoughtful, diminutive chap with a massive presence. He made that team tick, was hugely popular and respected by all. That’s because he was a damn good bloke.
What tragic news to hear of his sudden passing. I send deepest condolences and fondest love to all who grieve for Rod, and hope comfort can be taken in his remembrance.
