Richard Butterwick

I was immensely saddened to learn of Richard’s passing, someone who had been both a valued colleague and dear friend over many years.  Our initial conversations began when we started collaborating on a number of research studies a long time ago… he was starting out at Waltham, I has started working at the Universoty of Liverpool.  His scientific insights were always remarkable, he had a unique talent for seeing the bigger picture and could always seen the best part of travel to ensure success.  The work we did together is truly amongst my very best, and he work I am most proud of.  That is in no small part to down to Richard and his contributions.

But there was more than just work.  In getting to know Richard, I saw another side… we would share and joke and an informal chat, and we soon became friends… a friendship I very much value.  It soon emerged that we both had a keen an interest in cycling, so this rapidly became a topic of conversation whenever we met… each sharing our latest crazy journey, be it sportive or gentle ride in the country.  My fondest memory of all was the weekend that Richard and I spent together tackling the London Circular, a 180-mile ride around London, with a few challenging climbs thrown in.  The picture is one taken during that very event.

The news of illness was truly upsetting, and his passing more so.  Knowing the person he was, I am sure he will be missed by everyone.  I for one will never forget him… his friendship especially.  My sincere condolences to Richard’s family… I am so so sorry for your loss.
