Deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Ruth. The first time I had the privillege of meeting Ruth, she believed in me as a survivor and campaigner. I also had the privillege of sharing platforms and speaking alongside Ruth, raising awareness around domestic abuse and disability. An incredible person and activist, such a huge loss to the movement Rest in peace. Saliha xx…

Dear Ruth,  Your heart was a beautiful heart,  With limitless time for sharing,  A heart that was filled with a bright shining gift, Of your warm understanding and caring,  Your heart was a generous heart,  That found it’s true joy in giving,  In sending the needs of people around you,  And adding a richness to living,  Your heart was a wise, gentle heart,  That saw only goodness in others.  May you rest in peace and be among the angels.  M  …

We were all deeply saddened and shocked to hear about Ruth’s passing at Women’s Aid and have been reflecting on the enormous contribution that Ruth made to disabled survivors & the Violence Against Women and Girls sector more widely. She was tireless in seeking social justice, in the disabled people’s movement and for women experiencing violence and abuse, and defending and caring for survivors. She played a central role in establishing and building up Stay Safe East, a specialist ‘by and for’ service for disabled people, and she played a pivotal role in highlighting the barriers disabled women experiencing violence face to accessing safety and support. She will be missed by all her sisters at Women’s Aid.  …

I’m lost for words at this tragic loss.  I met Ruth in Walthamstow when I also worked on race equality for the council and her on disability rights.  She was an inspiration to all.  A dedicated fighter for all human rights. A tireless campaigner fighting for justice and sheer humanity.  I met her recently in her domestic abuse role. As a domestic abuse commissioner we were going to link. I’m sorry we never got the chance.  Miss you x…

Ruth was an amazing activist and campaigner . A fearless fighter for equality, justice and inclusion she achieved real change within the fields of anti hate crime, policing work and support for women and girls experiencing violence. We are so sad that our movement did not get the chance to thank her for all she had done when she retired . She will be much missed …

Ruth Bashall helped me through extremely difficult times, as an incredible advocate. Stay Safe East will continue to help so many people as Ruth’s continuing lecacy. She was an amazing person, whose empathy, warmth and humanity has touched so many lives. I can never thank Ruth and Stay Safe East enough for the help that I received. Ruth will live on in the memories of the many, many people who knew her, and in the work of Stay Safe East. Rest in peace Ruth….

Ruth, it was a genuine pleasure working with you over the years. I learnt so much from you and so looked forward to our meetings. You were so generous with your time and never missed the opportunity to get involved in anything and everything and brought so much to the sector and to those of us lucky enough to know you. You were such a champion for disabled victims and survivors, and advocated so passionately and with so much grace and humanity – and humour! There was never a dull moment when you were around! You’re very missed. Emily…

I am sad to learn of Ruth Bashall’s passing. I first met Ruth through the Metropolitan Police Service Hate Crime Diamond Group where she was a formidable and fierce advocate for the rights of disabled people. She played an instrumental part in raising awareness of disability hate crime and shared best practice with many people working across the UK hate crime sector today. I would like to share my condolences with her family, friends and colleagues of whom there are many. She will be missed but fondly remembered by all she has helped. Stay Safe East is what it is today because of Ruth and it will no doubt be a lasting legacy of her determination and hard work to make the world a better place….
