In Memory of

Nick Leatherland

Our colleague, Nick Leatherland, Senior Manager, Future Fund, sadly passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday 3 January.

Nick joined the Bank a year ago. A valued and admired member of the Future Fund team, he formed close bonds with everyone he worked alongside. His vast experience in banking and finance, particularly in Yorkshire, made him a well-known and respected figure in the finance industry.

This book is an opportunity for us all to share our memories of Nick and messages of condolence.

I only had the privilege of knowing Nick for a short time, but in this time he showed me true kindness and taught me so much. I was amazed by how readily he took me under his wing and made the effort to get to know me and support me. It is clear from talking to other people and reading other messages here that this was in Nick’s nature – he was a truly kind, compassionate person who wanted the best for everyone and always went the extra mile to make people feel comfortable and happy. Nick brought so much light and joy to our team and he was a huge part of the reason I looked forward to coming to work – he was deeply funny, generous with his time and an all-round genuinely lovely person. Nick, you will be hugely missed by all of us, and I send my deepest condolences to your closest friends and family….

Nick, I had not had the pleasure of working with you for very long but in the short time we did collaborate I found you to be warm, friendly, supportive and a thoroughly decent gent. I am only sorry that I didn’t get to work with you for longer. I was so very sorry to hear of your passing. It is extremely unfair that someone so valued would would be taken too soon. My heartfelt condolences to all your family and friends x…

Nick was one of the good guys – always there to support and assist and a real inspiration to those around him. He taught me many things and was always a great advocate when we worked together in Sheffield. Sincere condolences to Liz and the whole family – RIP Nick and thanks. …

I left off writing this for as long as I could as I am honestly still in shock at your sudden passing, Nick. Nick was so kind and thoughtful, in his own unique way. I didn’t have a long time to get to know him, but from my first introductory meeting with him in March 2023, it was clear that he was a truly decent human. Nick would check up on me right after meetings, even when I didn’t expect it, just to make sure I was alright and had no concerns, regardless of what was discussed. One thing I remember, looking back now, is how dependable I thought he was. To Liz and family, I am so sorry for your loss, but please take a little comfort in knowing that Nick lived an impactful life, as you can see from all the heartfelt testimonies here.   Rest in Peace, Nick. Nick always made time to say hello and have a chat with collegues at work whether he knew them closely or not. He always came across as a kind and cheerful man, never without a smile on his face and he had a great sense of humour! I know he will be much missed by all of his colleagues. Thinking of all you all at this difficult time. …

I was so sorry to hear about Nick’s passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know Nick over the past few months and he was fantastic to work with – such a professional, warm and funny guy who always put others first. My lasting memory is how fondly he spoke of his family (and dogs!), he was so proud of you all and was really looking forward to the forthcoming nuptials. Nick will be missed. Sending you love at this extremely difficult time. Beth x…

Nick It has been my privilege to have known and worked alongside you for over 20 years. From my early days at YB in Broughton Lane to the recent times at BBB, you have always been approachable, helpful, and able to laugh even when things were difficult. It is with great sadness and shock that I learned of Nick’s untimely passing. We worked briefly together at BBB and I always found Nick to be wise, professional and thoroughly decent and kind. I know that he is and will be greatly missed. I am so sorry for your painful loss….

To Nick’s beloved family, words won’t be able to describe the loss you are feeling at this present time. Here at the BBB, we were fortunate enough to get to experience Nick for a short period of time, but as you will see from the messages in this book, it didn’t take long for him to make a big impact. He was the big friendly giant, with one of the largest hearts I have ever known. Passionate, warm, kind, genuine, putting others first always, loving, caring, funny, witty…I could go on but all that was just Nick, and using just is a true understatement. I hope overtime you can take comfort in knowing just was an impact he made on others around him and how much he loved you all, as it was clear from any brief encounter that he was a family man and will leave a big hole. To Nick, thank you for being more than a colleague, thank you for being a friend. Even with a significant age difference and being at different places in life, it didn’t matter. You still connected, listened, supported and provided a bright spark on some gloomy days. As with most…

I worked alongside Nick at the start of his banking career at Yorkshire Bank, Firth Park; going on 40 years ago. Whilst we were on different journeys, our paths fortunately crossed many times. Nick was a strong character full of life & cheek and could always make you smile. I recall that he enjoyed his sports and could hit a rounders ball as far as any golf ball. We had fun establishing the Yorkshire Bank Rounders Team in early days. To learn of his passing is thoroughly upsetting and I offer my deepest condolences to all his family and friends. RIP….

Nick – writing this is incredibly difficult and it’s so unfair that it has to be done at all. There’s so much to say, which reflects the huge impact you had on everyone, even in a short space of time. But honestly, no amount of words can truly do it justice. I knew early on that I had been unbelievably lucky in landing in your management line. You took the time to get to know everyone on a personal level, taking a true interest and remembering the details. From day one, your endless encouragement filled me with confidence. It was always a pleasure seeing your name pop up on my screen, before answering and seeing your bright, happy, always smiling face, and hearing “y’alright love”. I will miss that every day. The title of “work dad” is not easily won, but who could deny it when you worked so hard to keep spirits high – whether that be by listening, advising, guiding, supplying the bacon sandwiches and coffees, or the special advent calendar at Christmas. Even down to thinking of us on Christmas day. A one-of-a-kind person, manager, mentor, colleague, friend – never looking for praise or recognition in…

Nick, you were one of the best. It was a privilege to work alongside you and I will always carry a small part of your approach to life and work with me. Our conversations on gardening will, in particular, be fondly remembered. When I’m back out in the allotment I’ll be thinking about the advice and opinion you gave so kindly. You were a truly gentle man in every regard. Rest easy Nick, and see you again. To Nick’s family and friends, I cannot imagine how you are feeling at this moment, and I send my dearest thoughts and condolences to you. RIP…
