In Loving Memory of

Manfredi Caltagirone

Manfredi Caltagirone, 46, passed away on June 18, 2025, in Madrid, Spain. Born on April 21, 1979, in Rome, Italy, Manfredi lived a life marked by passion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to environmental progress.

A dedicated leader in the global fight against climate change, Manfredi joined the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2012. He brought with him not only a deep understanding of environmental policy—shaped by his earlier roles at the Italian Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Foundation—but also an infectious zest for life that inspired all who worked with him. At UNEP, Manfredi quickly became a driving force within what was then known as the Energy and Climate Branch (now the Mitigation Branch).

His early contributions included helping to establish the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), a key mechanism for technology transfer under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. But it was through his vision and leadership of the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) that Manfredi left an indelible mark. Under his guidance, IMEO flourished into a pioneering initiative that brought cutting-edge science and data transparency to the forefront of methane emissions tracking in the oil and gas sector. One of IMEO’s most significant achievements during his tenure was the integration of its Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0) measurement framework into the European Union’s first-ever regulation on methane emissions reduction in the energy sector (EU/2024/1787), which came into force on August 4, 2024. This milestone stands as a testament to Manfredi’s ability to bridge science and policy through innovative partnerships with industry stakeholders.

Manfredi was known not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his dynamic personality. He was an innovator—a disruptive force who challenged norms because he believed deeply in urgent action against climate change. He “push, push, pushed” himself and those around him not out of ambition alone but from a profound sense of responsibility toward our planet.

Beyond his work, Manfredi was cherished as a friend and colleague. His generosity knew no bounds; he gave freely of his time and energy to support others both personally and professionally. Whether passionately defending Italian coffee or cheering for his favorite football club, he brought warmth and humor into every room he entered. His laughter—often directed at himself—was contagious, and his presence uplifting.

Above all else, Manfredi was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his beloved wife Pilar and their two children. Their loss is immeasurable, and our hearts go out to them during this profoundly difficult time. Manfredi Caltagirone leaves behind a legacy of impact, integrity, and inspiration. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and strength to those who continue the work he so passionately championed.

I am very sorry to hear about Manfredi’s passing and would like to offer my deepest condolences to his family, co-workers, and anyone who worked with him. I can’t imagine the methane-climate community without him. Manfredi created or helped create so many intiatives that are innovative in trying to address the methane emissions. He knew how to look the issues straight in the face and come up with solutions without bogging down in obstacles. My colleagues and I appreciated him attending and presenting at many Global Methane Initiative events. Manfredi was a friend of GMI, offering advise, perspective, and ideas on how to move forward. He is gone too soon and will be missed. I feel fortunate to have met him. …

I wish to express my deep condolences to Manfredi’s family, friends, and my former colleagues at UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory.  Manfredi was one of the most passionate people I have ever met, and if just a little of his passion for global methane reduction has rubbed off on me, I am a very lucky person.  The world has lost a great climate leader, but his legacy will live on in those of us who carry on his mission.  Push, push, push ……

My heart goes out to Manfredi’s family, friends, and his team at IMEO during this incredibly difficult time. It’s hard to put into words just how much his energy and his optimism have contributed to making methane matter. His unwavering enthusiasm and his belief that change is within reach will remain an inspiration. The world truly is a better place for having had him in it. Thank you for everything, Manfredi. You will be deeply missed. I am immensely grateful to have been touched by your kindness….

I am devastated to learn we have lost such a great man, and friend, as Manfredi. Few people will leave such a profound and positive impact on the world as he was able to. I was proud to be work in his presence on IMEO and OGMP 2.0, two incredible institutions that he led. We will honor him by carrying the torch on climate in any small way that we can. I will remember fondly his helpful travel advice for my wife and I as we honeymooned in Italy (reluctantly sharing with me insight on “places meant for Italians only”), and (very) late night conversations over gin and tonics whilst traveling. It was always a pleasure to see him smiling through that bushy beard. My heart breaks for his family, friends and close colleagues at UNEP and IMEO, my deepest condolences to them….

The news of Manfredi is hard to sink in.  He died way to early. So sad. He will be deeply missed.  We have lost a true leader in the climate space. Manfredi was determined, innovative, collaborative and just unique. He had made a lasting difference.  I have enjoyed his ideas, challenges and company and I am very sad to see this friend with so many dreams, so much vitality and knowledge and care is not here any more. I loved his jokes and how he always reminded us about the beauty of italian food, coffee or football. I send my thoughts. condolences and prayers to his family that he loved so much, especially his beloved wife, the kids he was so proud and fond of, and the many many collegues and friends in this difficult time.    …

Dear UNEP family, Words are difficult at this time. Manfredi had a presence that endures. His energy and passion for the climate were evident from day 1 – would never have guessed he was a lawyer ! He was a force when in the room and without whom the red lines in negotiations would have stalled progress. But above all, he was a person you wanted to speak and engage with. We first met in around 2017 during OGMP1.0 and in the years since he remained the same Manfredi despite his elevated position in the UN. Trusted, respected, admired. Willing to push back and challenge when needed but thoughtful, respectful and self-critical also. A true unwritten test to how someone has made their mark is how folk react to their passing and this condolence board is testament to Manfredi. I will remember the beaming smile, the thick beard and curly hair and the friendly face. My thoughts and prayers to his family both at home and work. Sonna…

It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Manfredi. He played a uniquely important role in the climate & methane landscape as we know it today. Moreover, he was an exceptionally pleasant and joyful person to collaborate and talk with. We will all really miss him. My sincere condolences to his family and his colleagues at IMEO….

Ciao Manf, vecchio amico mio.
