Kevin Hughes

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of retired DAC Kevin Hughes after a short illness. Kevin joined the London Fire Brigade (LFB) in 1987 and retired in 2017. He was a highly qualified fire engineer and an excellent fireground officer. He was known widely in fire safety circles in the UK and beyond, where he was a well-respected fire safety professional representing the National Fire Chiefs Council. He was an invaluable part of shaping the global collaboration in developing international fire safety standards, bringing his fire engineering expertise to the International Standards Committee. Our thoughts are with his wife and business partner, Lisa, at this sad time. He will be greatly missed by those of us who knew him and worked with him, even after his time in the LFB ended.

Both Marilyn & I were sad to hear this news. Kevin was a colleague in the fire service and a friend. We had many great social times together and with Lisa too. Fond memories and sadly missed. Condolences to Lisa and Kevin’s wider family. We’ll raise a glass and toast your memory. …

We were deeply saddened to hear of Kevins passing, Terrie and I worked with Kev for many years and I had the pleasure of going through the fire engineering degree with him at Southbank, so many grerat memories of that time. Kevin was a respected officer, by his peers as well as those he lead, he was also a valued friend who will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with Lisa and his family, a glass will be raised and a candle lit for our “absent friend”. …

I worked with Kevin not only when we were both in the Fire Safety department, but also in his other roles throughout the years.  He was one of those people I turned to when I needed a knowledgeable, experienced and trustworthy officer to provide the operational perspective.  I had enormous respect for him, for his deep knowledge of operations and fire safety, which he coupled with a genuine passion for the Brigade’s work.  He was always supportive, fair and sometimes challenging (in a good way).  I send my sincere condolences and best wishes to his family, I can’t believe he’s been taken so soon. …

Kev – it was a honour working with you either during the later stages of your LFB career or as part of the Fire Safety Apprecticeship work, in particular your support in helping us to increase the funding band. Your time and support with TDE’s was in-valuable for the SC process and any ICE after a TDE with you was always going to be easy. LOL. Thinking of Lisa, family and friends at this sad time. Rest easy and the UK has lost an influential person in the fire safety world. neil …

In the time I worked with Kevin, it was always clear that he had a passion for Fire Safety and for the people he worked with. While Kevin was direct in approach, he was always supportive and made time for those that needed it. On the fire ground, Kevin was knowledgable, calm and competent. Kevin will be missed, R.I.P. …
