In Loving Memory of

Jonathon Fernyhough

Jonathon joined the University in August 2014 as a Computer Officer providing Linux support to the Department of Computer Science. He then picked up his teaching roots in December 2019, working as an Associate Lecturer on the online programme until August 2021, when he joined the HPC team providing Linux and research computing support. In May 2022 Jonathon joined Digital Services as a Software Developer, where he was settling into his team and enjoying learning new technologies when he was taken ill.

Jonathon was a keen open source advocate and his contributions to a number of open source projects and his support for their communities has been widely recognised over the past week, with several of those communities dedicating discussion threads to his memory, his participation and the friendships he made.

I worked briefly with Jonathon in Digital Services. I’ve been really saddened to hear of his passing. He was a really kind and knowledgable member of the team, with a great sense of humour. He will be sadly missed. …

I worked with Jonathon in Digital Services during 2022. I found Jonathon to be extremely kind and thoughtful in our interactions and noticed that he would always approach people with empathy. Jonathon always brought new perspectives to the work we were doing, encouraging us to think differently. My favourite interactions with Jonathon were when you could see his humour come through and those are the times I will remember when I think of him. I am very saddened to hear about Jonathon’s passing and would like to send my thoughts and condolences to his family and those close to him….

I worked with Jonathon in the Corporate Services Team. I was both shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Jonathon was always meticulous and professional in his work, but the quality that stood out to me most was his sense of humour. He was someone I could always share a joke with – something that’s definitely an asset in a team of developers. His presence will be sadly missed from the team….

Although I only knew Jonathon for a brief period I always found him to be a very kind and witty person. For someone so knowledgeable he was always humble and patient with others. I was saddened to hear of his passing and will miss him greatly, as will many people across the University….

We will miss Jonathon dearly in the Corporate Services team, although he was a very private person we would still see his humour shine through, once sharing ‘Jazz Emu’ songs on youtube before breaking into a burst of dancing over Zoom. I won’t forget these little moments of happiness he gave us….

I’ve never met Jonathon in person, however I did work in the same Linux Support-related team as him for a short time in IT Services. I can’t recall a single time in which a conversation with him wasn’t as pleasant or informative as one could possibly hope for – I’d know that when he responded to a message of mine I’d be in for a treat, with no hint of arrogance – just warmth and wisdom. His loss will be felt by many I believe, not only for the loss of a great deal of knowledge but someone who did bring joviality to a place which is often mired in dispassion….
