Book of Remembrance of

Dr Stuart Mitchell

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of Dr Stuart Mitchell, a much respected colleague and friend who spent much of his working life with the CAA.

Stuart joined the Authority in 2000 after completing his general professional training in internal medicine and spending some time at the Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine, where he undertook high altitude and other physiological research to support military aircrew.

His early years at the CAA were spent in the occupational health and aeromedical centre. Following a short period away, he returned to senior appointments, including Head of the Aeromedical Centre, Head of the Aeromedical Section, Head of Aeromedical Safety Systems and Emerging Technologies, and finally as Head of Medical Policy.

In 2022, Stuart left the CAA to become the Medical Director at Qatar Airways, a role he fulfilled for over 2 years before returning to the UK. He continued his work as a senior aeromedical examiner for Heathrow Medical Services and for NATS, where he was also involved in developing medical policy for air traffic controllers.

Stuart will be remembered for his gentle intelligence that proved authority need not be shouted to be effective. He championed aeromedical research both nationally and internationally, particularly in the area of assessing acceptable medical risk, and was the driving force behind the CAA’s work on insulin treated diabetes and passenger health considerations for space travel.

His warmth, dry sense of humour and quick wit will be missed by us all and Stuart’s legacy will be felt across the aerospace medicine community for many years to come. Our condolences go out to his wife Philippa and his children.

To all of Stuart’s family, please accept my most sincere condolences for your loss. I knew and worked with Stuart during his time with the CAA, Stuart was one of those very rare, genuinely nice people – professionally expert, a gentleman to talk to, never too busy to assist an enquiry and totally rewarding with whom to interact. The sort of person one for whom you always slowed down to speak with and to learn from, Stuart always added something to my day. Great loss – greatly missed. BB…

We both had the privilege of knowing and working with Stuart for many years, and we feel his loss personally as well as professionally. Alongside his kind heart and wonderful sense of humour, Stuart brought deep knowledge, thoughtfulness and fresh perspectives to everything he did, driven by his commitment to making aviation safer. He earned the respect and affection of colleagues across the CAA and around the world. Stuart made teams stronger and his influence will stay with us for many years to come. Our thoughts are with Stuart’s wife and family. We hope they can find some comfort in knowing how widely he was admired, how greatly he was valued, and how fondly he will be remembered. May he rest in peace….

Dr Stuart was the most lovely person, easy to talk to and get along with. He was always very supportive of the work me and my team were engaged in and always brought much clarity and detail to our work. His departure was a big loss for the CAA, but a huge gain for Qatar Airways and those he worked for afterwards. My thoughts are with his family at this saddest of times. …

This is indeed sad news. I was fortunate enough to work with Stuart on a number of educational courses within the CAA; I found him to be reasoned, calm, polite and extremely pleasant. He was able to put a positive spin on whatever came our way and was always ready to chat and listen over a coffee. A gentleman….

I am truly shocked by this sad news and my thoughts are with Stuart’s family.  He was a kind and thoughful colleague who always had the best interests of aviation safety at heart.  I had many meetings and discussions with him over his years at the CAA, where he shared his wealth of knowledge and proportionate approach. He was a guiding hand in so many aviation medicine issues and he will truly be a loss to the industry. May it bring some comfort to his family that he was highly respected as a Doctor, Aviation Specialist and a thoroughly good human being.    Fair winds and a following sea Stuart…
