It was with great sadness that I learned that my friend and mentor had died last summer    As a family we send condolences and sympathy to Jenny and the whole Porter family.

Alastair was a great person.   He travelled across Europe with my father, Peter Storie-Pugh, on behalf of the RCVS and the BVA.  Many an evening spent with a glass in hand at one or other Belgian cafe – two best pals together.

When I came on the scene at the age of 19, Alastair kept me on the straight and narrow.  He helped me with speeches and what to do next at all the BVA and RCVS congresses; without him I would have made a complete mess of things!

Alastair spoke at my grandfather’s funeral, he spoke at my father’s funeral, and he spoke at my wedding. He was very much a treasured part of our family life.  I shall miss him enormously as no doubt will many others.

Rest in peace, Alastair, until we meet again.
