Simon Northridge
I first met Simon in person in 2008, at an ACCOBAMS bycatch workshop in Rome, while I was still an undergraduate student. He left a big impression on me, not just by being an amazing scientist, but also by being a really nice person. I vividly recall that I first heard the English term “law of diminishing returns” from him. I also always remember him as one of the people who always demonstrated what good and unbiased science looks like.
Since then, I was lucky enough to have been taught by Simon during my postgraduate studies, but also sharing a few beers with him later on, all moments that I cherish. He also helped out our research group when one of our acoustic devices malfunctioned, by lending us one of his devices, without hesitation or wanting anything in return.
He always seemed to have this sharp piercing look in his eyes, both inquisitive and somewhat mischievous at the same time… hard to explain.
Even though my own amount of interaction with him was limited, I know he touched the lives of many other students and fellow scientists.
It is a huge loss of science and conservation, and for all of us that knew him.
Simon, you will be missed, but I will not forget all your input in so many ways. Thank you for everything.
Sincere condolences to Simon’s family.
