Michael Peter Levick Fogden
Mike was not only a first-class ecologist but also one of the finest photographers of tropical natural history in the world. When my wife Tina and I returned from a visit to Costa Rica in 1989, having seen the ongoing destruction by humans of the rainforest there, we started the charity, Children’s Tropical Forests, dedicated to raising awareness of the plight of the world’s rainforests and funds for their consrvation. Much of our success in achieving these aims is down to Mike and Tricia’s generosity in giving the charity free use of their stunning photographic images. Our promotional literature and transparencies for illustrated talks and lectures are based on Mike’s incomparable photographs of the birds, mammals, plants and insects of the tropical forests. Until Tina’s premature death, we paid annual visits to Monteverde in the Tileran range of Costa Rica, and spent happy times with Mike both at his home and trekking down through the Cloud Forest to stay in a wooden hut, complete with Assassin Bugs and large spiders, in the Penas Blancas Valley, now part of the National Park. Mike was not only a good friend but through his talent and generosity, an important part of raising awareness of the importance of rainforests and also of the seriuos problems facing them.
