When we had heard of Katie’s passing, I was asked to choose a poem that could be shared at the assembly memorial with staff and students. Rather than select one, I wrote this especially for her, in the hope to honour her hopes and dreams and carry on her legacy.
We Carry You with Us (A Poem for Katie)
In this tapestry of life, a shadow cast by your setting sun,
Now departed, journey done.
Through laughter shared and tears now shed,
We continue on our quest, in your stead.
Through gentle words to a struggling child,
In the warmth of stories, each gasp, each smile.
With pages turned and lessons taught,
Your dreams will live, never depart.
In the corridors of possibilities, your footsteps softly fade,
A fleeting spark extinguished, but a memory forever laid.
So we carry you with us, educators all,
In the tapestry of learning, every classroom, every hall.
Residing with us, your presence will stay,
As we journey on, day by day.
