Every memory I have of Bernie involves laughing. Whether we were talking science or nonsense, having a drink in a bar or sitting in a seminar, it was impossible to be in Bernie’s company and not smile. But what made Bernie unique was he combined that wit and quick wry smile with a deep intelligence and a genuine kindness. He will be deeply missed by all of us whose professional and personal lives he enriched.
