Frankie first met Tricia in 1990 when Frankie visited Monteverde. Mike was away filming at the time. Frankie had collected the best total for Robin and Tina Jolliffes’ charity ‘Children’s Tropical Rain Forests’ in that year, at Stamford High School where she was teaching. As a result she, with one student, were invited to attend a course in Rainforest Ecology at the Monteverde Institute. Tina suggested finding Tricia while they were there. So Frankie met Tricia at the Hummingbird Gallery and subsequently they corresponded for a while with Frankie sending Tricia the property section of the Eastern Daily Press. Then correspondence stopped until, in 2005, we retired to Weybourne and met both Tricia and Mike at Cley where Mike was giving a talk. A little later we visited them at their house where Tricia had miraculously unearthed a postcard which Frankie had sent to her in Costa Rica after the 1990 trip. Tricia had kept it all that time! Frankie and Tricia renewed their friendship and soon we all became friends. Nick very much enjoyed Mike’s photography and a shared interest in British insects and pollinators. Latterly Mike liked to talk about ‘pulling up the drawbridge’ and simply enjoying the wildlife around the house and local area. His last book, published in 2022, is however totally up to date and gives a superb account of current issues about ‘Pollinators in Crisis’ – and is, of course, beautifully illustrated.
