My deepest condolences to Michaela’s family for this tragic loss. Michaela fought hard against the disease until the very end -a true fighter. She will always be remembered for her strong will, a dedicated human rights defender and a women’s rights advocate; she aimed to improve peoples’ lives through the projects she worked on and promote gender equality where she worked. A few years back I quoted Cretan Nikos Kazantzakis in a card I wrote to Michaela: “You have your brush, you have your colors, you paint your paradise, then in you go”. Looking back, I know she did have her very own paradise: loving family, long-lasting friendships, books, travels, water skiing…great laughs, above all! That’s part of Michaela’s paradise, as she had created it -and this way she will continue to live with us and never be forgotten.
