I remember being terrified of Dens the first time I met her, up by her project whiteboard (tucked away in the back corner of Temple Circus), new to IOP Publishing and new to magazines. I was intimidated by her assertiveness and vision and frustration that nothing was moving as fast as she wanted it to.
As soon as we started working more closely together I quickly realised I had no need to be scared. Dens was simply the most wonderful colleague – yes she was vocal and expressive and confident in her views, but she was also kind and compassionate and fundamentally wanted to deliver the best product possible.
Not only was Dens a close colleague, but I also saw her as my team-mate, a confidante, a friend and a mentor. We spoke constantly (sometimes multiple times a day) and always had fun, even if we were also tearing our hair out. She will be so deeply missed, but I feel grateful that I got to know her and work with her. I will endeavour to always try and emulate her consideration and care for others, and now have the life mantra of “What would Dens think?”. You won’t be forgotten Dens.
