Grace Poulter
I lost someone very close to me a few years ago. They too passed suddenly at an age too young. At the time, a friend said to me ‘There are some people who are too good for this world, and so they are taken from us early’. On hearing about Grace, this sentence immediately came to mind. I think she too, was too good for this world. Words like generous, kind, and witty, can only scrape the surface of her amazing qualities. Her support felt unconditional and always, when needed, she was there expressing outrage and empathy on your behalf until you were ready to hear a voice of reason, advice and guidance. In that way, she accompanied me through many moments of difficulty in my personal and professional life. Her writing retreats got me through my PhD and introduced me to people I am friends with to this day. She helped me access opportunities that have enhanced my career and has shared wisdom from which I am sure I will benefit for the rest of my life. My favourtie memories, however, are the coffees with conversations that started with … ‘I probably shouldn’t be saying this but …’ and were followed with mischief and hilarity. I am heartbroken at her loss but am taking solace in imagining her running from an eternity of resting in peace and opting for an eternity of good-natured mischief making and laughter, probably armed with a Blackwing 602 and a favourite bottle of whisky for sustenance. Thank you for everything Grace, you were a wonderful human being.
