I only learned that Helen had passed away when I read to the end of the new National contingency plan for West Nile Virus in England published 21 May and reached the “Tribute to Helen Roberts, Defra” at the end…I had to re-read it to believe it. Our paths crossed infrequently but over many years. She generously gave her time and provided a measured and well-informed voice at meetings to evaluate the threat of exotic diseases to the equine industry. She was so central to preparedness for responding to exotic disease threats that it is difficult to imagine the impact of her loss at so many levels. She was exactly the sort of person you would want on hand in any storm – pragmatic, calm and reassuring and a fount of knowledge. Rest in peace Helen knowing that you have contributed greatly across many fields.
