I was really sad to hear of Paul’s passing. He was a superb scientist who really made you think through ideas and was always suggesting novel approaches or directions. I was always truly impressed by his huge support to younger colleagues and recall how supportive he was to me as a young lecturer including allowing me to take the lead in a joint project.

He was an inspiration to so many of us particularly since his enthusiasm in science was also present in his teaching and the department in general. Paul will be greatly missed and departmental meetings won’t be the same without him. I will miss the insight, humour and enthusiasm he brought to all types of gatherings.
