Adedoyin Onagoruwa (B.Sc., MBA, MAcc, CICA, ACIB, FCA)
Once again, death proves so unkind.
This loss has truly hit home, and I must confess that I have been deeply distraught since I heard the news.
Doyin, in school, you were nothing short of a gem. I unfortunately related with very few people at the time, but I can never forget the few moments we shared. The genuineness in your eyes and the warmth you carried were always a beautiful welcome to anyone who crossed your path.
Fast forward to many years later, last year was the first time we met again since school, and you made my stay in Detroit truly memorable. That reunion now carries an even deeper meaning for me.
The painful part is that I was still in Detroit during the World Cup in July. I remember we were supposed to go to the park on the 4th of July, when you texted me that you wouldn’t be able to make it because you were unwell. I simply replied, “Get well, Doyin. I’m sure it’s stress.”
I wish I had pressed further. I wish I had asked more about your health. I wish I had visited to check on you before I left Detroit a few weeks later. Sometimes, all we need is the opportunity to talk, to share our burdens and our pains with one another. Perhaps, in doing so, we find a little succour for the mind and the heart.
It is painful knowing that I will never get that opportunity with you again.
You were a good soul, Doyin, and your memory will remain with me.
May God grant your family and all your loved ones the strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear this immeasurable loss. Sending my deepest love and heartfelt condolences to everyone you left behind.
Rest peacefully, my friend.
