Peter Hoffman

I was lucky enough to collaborate with Peter on many occasions, over a period of more than 20 years.  This included various British Standards committees and also working on guidance documents that required infection control input.  Peter had a huge breadth of knowledge in so many microbiological areas, and his contributions to the meetings I attended were always concise, accurate and helpful.  I learned so much from him, even as an experienced microbiologist myself.  What wasn’t always obvious in those meetings was his very dry sense of humour.  I once remember going to chat with him over lunch at some science meeting or other, and somehow I managed to catch my paper plate and flip a tuna mayo sandwich squarely on to the toe of one of his shoes.  I was horrified and profusely apologetic as he stared down at it…I hadn’t seen him for ages, and when I did, I’d managed to shower food on him!  He just looked at me and said, dead pan….’Well at least it’ll do the leather good’.  It was so funny and I’ll always remember it – it immediately put me at ease.  So very sorry to hear of Peter’s untimely passing but his many and important contributions to national and international microbiology and infection control, in all of its facets, will continue for many years to come.  RIP Peter.
