Andy Macleod
I first met Andy whilst helping to interview candidates for Protector’s new London office. At this point I was relatively new to the industry, but well versed in Protector’s culture. I wasn’t fit to lace Andy’s boots from an underwriting perspective, and had incredibly limited input to what he was saying in the interview, but it was clear as day that he was an excellent underwriter. When he left the room, my colleague and I looked at each other and said “If this is the standard of underwriter in London, then we are going to have a great but difficult choice to make”. Without being disrespectful to the other candidates, Andy had in fact made it an incredibly easy choice to make, it turned out he was head and shoulders above the rest. This was not the standard of a London underwriter, it was the standard that Andy was setting to the market. We felt like we had pulled of the recruitment of Protector’s history when he accepted and joined.
Since then Andy and I shared desks opposite each other, and would often talk whilst craning our necks above our monitors. I am endlessly thankful for the wisdom he imparted, both on a professional and personal perspective, such as how to handle a 3 vs. 1 (wife and daughters vs. husband) situation at home (I’m currently at 2 vs. 1).
Andy, I can’t express how thankful I am for the times we have shared together, you will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.
