Book of Memories of

Richard Butterwick

It’s with a very heavy heart that we say goodbye to our dear friend and colleague, Richard. For those of us who had the privilege of knowing him, we’ll remember not just a brilliant mind, but an incredibly warm and kind soul who will be deeply missed. Richard had a special gift for making people feel seen and heard. He was always generous with his time, offering support and encouragement to everyone he met.

His journey with Mars began in 1991 at the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, where throughout his career he was a respected voice in pet nutrition for all of Petcare. The work he led in areas like obesity and gastrointestinal health in pets has left a lasting impact on the entire pet care community.

In 2018, Richard was honored with the Mars R&D Award for Lifetime Contribution, a testament to his unwavering dedication. This award recognized what we all knew: Richard proudly lived the Five Principles, with a passion for creating a Better World for Pets.

But beyond the accolades and achievements, we’ll remember Richard as a proud family man. His wife, Sarah, and their three children, Oscar, Felix, and Eliza, were the centre of his world. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them during this incredibly difficult time.

Richard’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication will continue to inspire us all. He will be dearly missed.

Such a tragedy that we have lost such a wonderful human being.  I have had the pleasure of working with, and beng inspired by Richard on and off for well over 20 years. I always found the same kind and caring soul, eager to help and support, never phased or overawed by anything. Problems were met with a smile, and people even more so. Thoughts and well wishes to the family that have lost so much more than we have. However, know this, far from being forgotten, Richard will live long and shine brightly in the memories of so many of us, and a strong legacy will be felt for many years to come. …

Much to early. Richard, you have been an honest, very likeable, sometimes a bit cautious but always accessible colleague. You leave a void. Especially in your family, but also professionally. Rest in peace. …

I had the chance to work with Richard during 8 years. It was always a pleasure to meet him when I was visiting Waltham. He was super welcoming, inclusive, patient with me and collaborative. Each time I went to Waltham from France, he was the reassuring smiling face I was looking for to meet first. In his work environment he created incredible legacy for the next generation of Mars associates. Richard was a great person to work with, a great person whom this world deserves more. All my thoughts to his family and beloved….

My thoughts are with all of Richard’s family and friends at this time. Personally I will always hang on to some great memories of the many times I worked with Richard over the decades.  His contributions in nutrition were outstanding, his support as a colleague was second to none – and his friendhip and humour always much appreciated.  Richard – you will be greatly missed for many years to come. My love and strength to all of the family.   Pauline…

When I joined Waltham everybody was really kind and supportive. One day I was feeling a little down with some personal and family things. Richard walked past and asked how I was doing. I said I was fine and carried on walking. He stopped, walked back to me and asked me how I was really doing. We chatted for a few minutes and then went on with our day. To him that might have just been a small moment but for me it helped me feel seen and understood. His compassion and caring attitude is something we can all hope for and be better at.  …

Although I only had the opportunity to work with Richard for a short time, I truly appreciated his kindness and presence and he had a profoundly positive impact on my first few months at Waltham. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time…
