In Memory of

John Ball

Dear Libby

I was responsible for recruiting John in to LGC Standards in 2013 to be our European Sales Director. It was a challenging time for the business – with an uncertain market environment, high shareholder expectations and a busy acquisitive growth agenda – and I needed an experienced leader to bring our European sales offices together and provide some structure to our commercial growth strategy. John fitted the bill on all counts, bringing great experience from prior roles in the industry but more importantly, a calm and happy demeanour and an uncanny ability to quickly build trusting relationships with colleagues and customers. He was a key member of my senior leadership team in Standards from 2013-16 and latterly for my successor from 2016-18. He then rejoined LGC as a consultant from 2020 until September 2022. Over that period, he had a strong track record of commercial success, but was also universally liked and respected across the organization. A great colleague and a lovely man, who took pride in his work, but also huge pride in his family and was clearly loving being a grandfather in recent years.

While I have seen John less regularly in the recent past, it has been a pleasure to catch up when I have seen him – always with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye. As a result, I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of his unexpected death. I am so sorry for your loss – and hope that the knowledge of how widely John was liked and respected at LGC will serve as a small source of consolation during this difficult time.

With sincerest condolences from me personally and all of John’s old colleagues at LGC.

Dear Libby, Verity & Issie, I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of John. I had the opportunity to work alongside John at LGC.  I learn’t so much from John and the one thing that will always stay with me was him saying “you need to bang your own drum, no one is going to do it for you” Thank you John for being a great leader, teacher, mentor and friend. You have been one of the greatest people I have had the pleasure of working with. You are and will always be greatly missed.  Saiqaa…
