In Loving Memory of

Joe Royle

Joe was an integral part of SAFed, taking the role of Technical Manager in January 2015, through to his handover to Rachel Culpan in February 2023. Joe was an excellent right-hand man, he possessed the poise and patience to ‘herd the cats’, that is he had an excellent ability to move committees towards their targets. Joe worked with a quiet determination but those that were lucky enough to take a Guinness with him after the work was done would also be privy to his fun side and perceptible bounce.

Please share your memories and messages of Joe.

We at the Society of Operations Engineers and the BES sector are deeply saddened by the passing of Joe. He was such a vibrant character and will be greatly missed by so many. Our thoughts are with his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.    …

I first met Joe when he took over his role at SAFed in 2015. From the very start, he brought an energy, openness, and sense of purpose that transformed the committee. Where meetings had once been cautious and guarded, Joe broke down barriers and made TC4 a truly collaborative, friendly, and meaningful forum often with a mischievous grin and a sharp joke thrown in. I feel incredibly privileged to have worked closely with him, and to have benefited from his support, guidance, and encouragement over the years. His faith in me and belief in what we could achieve together made a real difference not just for me, but for the whole committee. Joe was more than a colleague; he was a proud British gentleman, someone who always knew how to enjoy a good pint. I will fondly remember our post-meeting “beefs” over a beer, his brilliant storytelling, his sharp mind, and his spirit. His passing is a huge loss, and he will be sorely missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him….

Joe was one of a kind, a British gentleman with a wicked sense of humour but also a huge amount of proffesionalism. I always greatly enjoyed Joe’s company. In my early years at SAFed TC4, he mentored me (took me to one side quietly and told me off when I spoke out of turn in meetings!) well and offered many words of advice, for which I will always be grateful. Towards the end of his career at SAFed I was fortunate to share many a beer with him at local establishments post meetings, and I loved listening to his stories. Joe broke down many barriers at TC4, creating a relaxed, open and honest forum where all felt comfortable to share thoughts and news.  I will remember Joe with great fondness and am incredibly saddened by his loss.  Sending my sincere condolences to Joe’s family, friends, and all at SAFed who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. …

I’m very sad to hear that Joe is no longer with us. He was a great guy with an excellent sense of humour, and I always enjoyed hearing his stories from the extraordinary life he’d led! I remember the days of him trying to help make some sense of the discussions at TC1 fondly, and he will certainly be missed. …

So sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. He was a valuable member of the SAFed team and aside from running a good meeting he was good fun and full of life. I was lucky enough to share more than 1 or 2 Guinness’s with him and the odd whiskey in a social setting around Dublin. Great bloke – Great memories – Gone too soon. …

Such sad news so soon after deciding to step away from the day job and live life to the full. We shared so many good times both in and out of TC7, farewell my friend.    …

Awful and shocking news. Such a great bloke to work with on TC1 and I’ve no doubt in his previous careers, we had some cheeky laughs. So sorry his retirement was so short and a lesson to us all…I just feel numb….
