Memories of

Clive Johnson

Our long-standing colleague Clive Johnson sadly passed away on the 23rd of September in hospital after a short illness.

Clive was well known to lots of staff having worked for the Royal Borough of Kingston for 23 years.

He was a highly respected and much-liked colleague involved in IT support over the years. He always went out of his way to be helpful and was tenacious in finding the best solutions to people’s problems. His dry humour always generated laughter.

He will be a massive loss to IT and the wider Council.

People can share their stories, thoughts and photos.  A book will then be created for his family to reflect on Clive’s working life at Kingston.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Clive was a much respected and valued member of the Digital & IT department. I only knew him for a relatively short while but did have the pleasure of buying him a glass of Malbec at Christmas, which he told me was his favourite wine, followed by a long chat. He will be missed….

Clive was always a cheerful face around the office (or in the underground carpark at the start or end of the day). He will have implemented many new IT initiatives over the years and seen lots of changes. He will be missed….

I was so sorry to read this news.  I never worked with Clive directly, but I will always remember his lovely smile whilst walking through the offices in both Kingston and at Sutton. I would always joke with him that I could never look after my chrome books very well and often dropped them, he’d always laugh and let me know how much I’ll be charged!  My thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.  RIP Clive. …

Clive was always so friendly and helpful. He’d never give up on a problem until it was solved. A huge loss to RBK. Rest in Peace Clive and my thoughts to your friends and family….

I’ll miss you Clive, it was always a very great pleasure to work with you and as many others have said, you worked on something until you found a way. With all our love to you, your family and friends, Alasdair  …

It was always a pleasure to work with Clive. When you asked him to do something, he’d always take the time to tell you a better way of doing it. Then he would do it for you anyway. He was honest and direct, practical and helpful, a real character and a true one-off. He had a great sense of humour too. Kingston & Sutton ICT, and the councils in general, won’t be the same without him. …

Clive Clive Clive, what a character.   Working with Clive always kept me on my toes, I have never worked with someone that had Clive’s work ethic, he was machine, he kept going until the job was done and never moaned.  Yes we may of had our spats over the years but hey that’s the way we rolled never personal just both had strong opinions.  Cliveisms will always remain and often find myself saying “Hold Up” in meetings.  Whenever users requested anything they always wanted Clive as they knew they would get a good job and he would have some kit hidden somewhere that he kept just in case someone needed it and resulted in them having it for free! lol.  Ian reminded me earlier if I had a tidy up Clive would retrieve the kit I had removed and put it back on the shelf.  Clive you were a legend, RIP mate x…

It was always such a pleasure to you working on something with me, Clive. You had so much enthusiasm and you were always happy to go through and explore options, give background and patiently explain context and technical details. …

Clive was a dedicated Support Engineer.  I found him very helpful in resolving IT issues, I had over the last nine years I worked with him. He was very approachable, and there were times Clive would come out of his way to support Will miss his unique personality, help and support. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this difficult time….

When the team were asked to get AnyConnect laptops set up, I really didn’t have a clue what that meant or how the task was going to get done.  So up stepped Clive and he made it happen, without any complaints or problems – I think there may have been a few dry jokes here and there and then before I knew it, our new laptops were delivered and ready for us to start work. Just one of may examples where Clive stepped up to the mark and just got the job done, an example to us all. I admired how direct and to the point Clive was, there was never any beating about the bush with him! One of a kind, old skool, Irreplaceable….

Clive was certainly one of life’s characters and we will all miss him….

Seeing Clive in the build room when you were just about to nip in and grab the stock room key was a fight or flight moment (in the best sense). You could either whiz in with a quick ‘Hey’ and run out with the key, or commit to a 15-30 minute discussion about whatever topic Clive had lined up. I never regretted choosing the latter and will miss being able to argue the toss with a man who was never shy of letting his views be known and arguing their case with a smile (usually). I never did convince him that Google was a good choice……
