NEW MESSAGE TO ALL:

Re: Taking on the Queen Elisabeth Hospital Barbados

We have to, not only to get justice for Mel, but to save lives in the future!

The official response we received from the hospital, after alerting them to what caused Mel’s death, is just as shocking as their actions or in our case inactions!
They did not even find it necessary to do an investigation into the cause of Mel’s death and hear this:
they contradict their own autopsy report with their (unprofessional and uncaring) answer!

The Emergency Department and the Board of Management of QEH are to be charged with:
Negligence resulting in death and neglecting to put measures in place to avoid such tragedy from happening again.

It cannot be that life has no value at a hospital. We as a community shall not accept this.

This is a clear case of one person not doing their job and then countless others, including a minimum of 10 doctors, who did not notice it.
A commonly known, simple, life-saving practise was forgotten, overlooked and this ultimately lead to Mel’s death.
We have all of the 30 pages of medical notes and reports, which were carefully studied by 3 doctors, including a neurologist.
They show how a small bleeding in the brain became a case of blood clots in the lungs, heart failure and ultimately death.

The thought that a simple prevention, applying circulation stockings to Mel’s legs, would have saved his life is almost unbearable.
But I am not surprised it happened, because I was there, I saw how they do not care and now I know how easily they are getting away with not doing their job.
When someone dies, no investigation into the actual reason is being done. Even though, it might be something that could have been avoided.
We cannot let them get away with it!

How many lives were lost in the emergency department, which could have been saved?
We will never know.
But the irony is heartbreaking!
This is where you end up when you call the Ambulance. This is where you are taken, when your life is in danger, this is whom you trust to do their best to save your loved ones, these are the people who swore to do all they can to save lives.
And yet, exactly there they don’t seem to give a … whether a patient survives or not!!!
I saw it, I looked into their eyes, I felt it, I know.

Since we lost Mel, I heard many other sad stories, which happened at the big QEH. But not many were able to investigate, do an autopsy and find out the true cause of death.
We have that. We can actually explain and proof what happened. Taking on the Board of the government hospital will not be easy, but the people of Barbados deserve better and so we have to.
Does Mia know what’s going on at “her” hospital?
Or the better question: does she care? Would she care if she knew?
After all, she might choose to go overseas for treatment, when it comes to her life. But what about those who have no choice, Mia?

Even though it pains us so much to relive the sad story of Mel’s death, we remain committed to seek justice and I am working on a QEH “unexplained deaths” platform, where others can tell their story and a “go-fund-me” page, if we need support to make it happen.
If you have any experience with either, please contact me: dhBarbados@gmail.com

Thank you for CARING!
