Martin Cox

I have held Jeremy with great respect for many years. I first really got to know him in some way when I was a local NAPO representative.  He took over a case of mine as the national representative. I was greatly impressed with the professional and productive manner in which he managed the case. Many years later, in another case, I had no hesitation in asking for his advice on dyslexia issues. I felt his selfless dedication was immense. I always felt people could approach him knowing he would not mind.

He was a fierce advocate for fairness and never feared for his own standing. His union history was outstanding and he should be regarded as the highest possible benchmark for activists. I recall his cautionary assessment to others about a very high ranking Probation manager. I was impressed with what I felt was his accuracy, as this person had been my senior many years previously.

His effectiveness was wide ranging. It used to remind me of Joan Baez! Her reach was much more world wide, but the drive from both of them was similar in many ways. For me, I cannot think of a better comparison.

Additionally,  his abilities were not confined to making the world a better, more equitable place.  His creative writing was a joy to behold. Nick Burkett’s antics were wonderful. His Probation users in Walthamstow were lucky to have him as a supervisor! He must have possessed a great imagination. Who else would think of, or even want, to visit all places in England beginning with the letter Q?

Parkinsons was a cruel blow for such a long distance walker. As far as I know, he was always uncomplaining and accepted his circumstances equably.

I was really sad to hear the news and feel sure his passing will be a great loss to many people. Still – he lived a grand life.
