Document Scotland are very saddend to hear of Stephen’s death.
Stephen was an open, honest, encouraging, supportive and engaged friend of Document Scotland. Our collective’s members, Sophie Gerrard, Colin McPherson and Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert enjoyed meeting with him in person on a number of occasions to discus our ideas, plans and, more generally, the way documentary photography in Scotland could be developed and supported.
Each time we engaged with Stephen, he was enthusiastic and generous with his excellent advice about the way we could take our photography forward and would often suggest people, institutions and organisations who we might be interested in approaching to collaborate and work with.
We know Stephen’s wit, charm, expertise,and positivity will be missed not only by his colleagues at Creative Scotland but also in the wider visual arts community in Scotland in which he played such an important and significant role. So many of the projects and initiatives Document Scotland worked on benefitted directly from Stephen’s help and encouragement and we will miss him enormously.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this heartbreaking time.
